Check Out These Chestnut Tree Guards

The principal purpose of tree guards is to prevent damage from livestock which will eat the bark and growing shoots. There are many options for protecting trees; from chestnut stakes to help upward growth (and the stakes applied with netting to protect saplings) to ornate chestnut post guards around established trees, protecting the trunks from unwanted activity. Sheep and cattle can easily kill even well-established trees by stripping the bark, and can deform young trees by eating the growing shoots, which needs to be avoided particularly when trying to establish trees in a parkland setting that need to develop an elegant shape.

A recent project involving Torry Hill’s chestnut posts was to provide protection to young trees but in a way that complemented the tree and the grounds. We were delighted to see these in situ and are pleased to share them with you.

Assembled and constructed by Matthews Fencing the chestnut posts look great, both solid and decorative. These guards are designed to prevent cattle from damaging the trees. We have other designs specifically for sheep.

Areas of natural beauty, sites of scientific interest, country parks and stately homes are in constant need of maintenance and protection to keep their ecosystems, landscapes and gardens in prime order for preservation of wildlife and flora. The need to protect these sites is paramount; especially woodland and tree management. Protecting new and old trees is part of preservation and of utmost importance is to minimise damage to them caused by animals.
